FOKO is on
Related to country: Madagascar

FOKO means “tribe” in the Malagasy language. An indication of our passion and love for our country and people, it is also a term of endearment meaning “My heart”.

FOKO is four Malagasy bloggers who have merged their brainpower to change this Malagasy saying :

Rahoviana no ho ritra ny ala atsinanana! the Eastern rainforests of Madagascar will never run out of trees !

BUT

Madagascar is burning.

Fires set for land-clearing and pasture land spread into adjacent wildlands causing damage to the island’s unique ecosystems. FOKO is taking actions, coming up with sustainable and science-based solutions that bring the world’s attention to the Malagasy people. When often biodiversity and lemurs are in the spotlight, FOKO wants to concentrate on the Malagasy people and make them a crucial factor in their unique and threatened environment.

Despite the rain, the multiple power outages, the many errors on the localisation, FOKO initiative to help Malagasy internet users to create their own weblog was a blast. Everywhere in the world, blogging is the newest cool thing to do and Malagasy people still think of it as toy for the expatriates, a way to show off. The Rendez-vous between fokosters from all over the world with the newcomers proved this misconception wrong. In fact, we took time to show them the potentialities of a weblog. When you can easily talk and share with others about your reality. A great way to be listen to when life is not easy and very frustrating. These new weblogs can become a breath of fresh air showing the world a new side of Madagascar.

The event reached a climax when a fokoster asked this simple question :

What would be the best way to improve Malgasy people's life?

And the chatroom got really heated, we couldn't say anymore who was in London, or in Kelilalina, or busy guiding to the first steps of blogging in Antohomadinika...We were all Malagasy in the heart. See you guyz next month then.
